Eriogonum visheri, also known as Dakota wild buckwheat or Visher's buckwheat, is a species of wild buckwheat native to the Great Plains in the United States. It is found in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Montana, with its center of distribution in South Dakota. This annual herb has erect stems and is described as "skeletal" in appearance. It grows in harsh, sparsely vegetated terrain and is a pioneer species, often growing on bare outcrops. The plant has few competitors and is able to thrive in high winds and soils with little organic matter. Associated species at its habitat include various grasses and shrubs. However, there are fewer than 100 occurrences of this species, and it is considered a "sensitive" species by the United States Forest Service. Threats to its survival include cattle grazing and trampling, as well as the spread of invasive plant species. While mining is a potential threat, it is not currently a concern. Although it was once a candidate for federal protection, Eriogonum visheri is no longer considered in need of such measures.
