Eriogonum cedrorum, also known as The Cedars buckwheat, is a rare species of wild buckwheat found only in Sonoma County, California. It is endemic to The Cedars, an area known for its diverse plant life, including other endemic species. This buckwheat is adapted to the unique serpentine canyon habitat, where it grows among mineral-rich waters with a high pH. It was first discovered in 1947 and officially described as a new species in 2009. There are only an estimated 1500 to 2000 individuals of this plant in existence, found in three locations. Eriogonum cedrorum is a mat-forming perennial herb with hairy or woolly leaves and a woody taproot. Its inflorescence, or flower cluster, is a striking yellow color that quickly turns dark red. This plant is an important part of the unique ecosystem of The Cedars and is a rare and valuable find for botanists and nature enthusiasts.
