Phytolacca dioica, also known as ombú, is a large evergreen tree found in the Pampas region of South America. It is dioecious, meaning it has separate male and female flowers, and is pollinated by the butterfly Doxocopa laurentia. With a wide canopy and reaching heights of up to 18 meters, it is derived from herbaceous ancestors and has soft, spongy wood that is easily manipulated for bonsai. Due to its poisonous sap, it is not grazed by cattle and is resistant to pests. It is a symbol of Uruguay and Argentina and is also cultivated in Southern California. However, it has been declared a minor invasive species in South Africa.
