Suggest a correction!Physena (Noronha ex Thouars) is a small genus placed in the family Physenaceae and recognized in current Angiosperm phylogenies within the order Caryophyllales, where it is morphologically isolated by an anomalous vascular cambium that forms included phloem and by numerous minute foliar crystals (APG IV, 2016). The genus contains approximately two to three species (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024). It is endemic to Madagascar and the nearby Comoros, occurring from sea level to moderate elevations in dry deciduous forests, littoral thickets, and scrub; P. sessiliflora is commonly cited as the type (Tropicos, 2023). The habit is shrubby to small arborescent, with simple, alternate, often coriaceous leaves that lack stipules; vegetative parts are frequently glabrescent to sparsely pubescent. Flowers are small, actinomorphic, and greenish, borne in axillary or terminal cymes or racemes; they have a differentiated calyx and corolla, numerous stamens with bithecal anthers, and a superior to half-inferior ovary that is usually 2-carpellate with axile placentation and one or two ovules per locule. The fruit is a loculicidal capsule with small, non-arillate seeds; germination has been described as relatively rapid, with seedling establishment favoring open, disturbed or coastal sites (Manning, 2013). The most notable anatomical specialization is the anomalous secondary growth, with included phloem strands embedded in wood, a character that has been used to argue for both the distinctness of Physenaceae and its placement near the asterid complex, although molecular evidence strongly supports its position within Caryophyllales (APG IV, 2016; Soltis et al., 2011). Chromosome reports for Physena appear sparse and remain unconfirmed in the major synopses. At the sectional or subgeneric level, Physena is not typically subdivided; traditional arrangements have varied in their circumscription and occasional synonymy with Physena as the sole genus of Physenaceae versus alternative family or ordinal treatments, but these are now resolved in favor of monotypic Physenaceae within Caryophyllales (APG IV, 2016; Soltis et al., 2011). The genus contributes little to horticulture or economic botany; the few species are occasionally cultivated in botanical gardens as curiosities of Malagasy flora, with no major timber, crop, or weed significance. Field surveys indicate localized pressures from habitat loss and fragmentation in coastal and dry forest regions; while a comprehensive IUCN assessment is pending for all species, the genus underscores the need for targeted conservation planning in Madagascar’s rapidly diminished dry biomes and for continued research into its unique wood anatomy and phylogenetic position (WFO, 2024; Miller, 2010).
