Silene stenophylla, also known as narrow-leafed campion, is a species of flowering plant found in the Arctic tundra of far eastern Siberia and the mountains of northern Japan. In 2007, frozen samples of the plant were discovered in the same area as living specimens, estimated to be around 32,000 years old. In 2012, a team of scientists successfully regenerated a plant from these frozen samples, breaking the previous record for the oldest plant material brought back to life. The plant is a perennial that grows on stony cliffs and sandy shores, and is one of the few Beringian plant species that did not establish itself in North America. The successful regeneration of Silene stenophylla has also inspired further research into the viability of ancient life in permafrost, leading to the discovery of a viable giant virus in 30,000-year-old Siberian permafrost.
