Arenaria norvegica, also known as Arctic, English or Norwegian sandwort, is a low-growing plant found in northwest Europe. It belongs to the Caryophyllaceae family and has a diploid chromosome number of 2n=80. There are two recognized subspecies of this plant.
The plant is characterized by its much-branched, low-growing structure and indistinct midrib on the leaves. The two subspecies, Arenaria norvegica subsp. anglica and Arenaria norvegica subsp. norvegica, differ in their growth patterns and leaf shapes. Both subspecies are rare and localized, with subsp. anglica found in limestone regions in the UK and subsp. norvegica found in Scotland, Ireland, Scandinavia, and Iceland.
Arenaria norvegica is mentioned in Edward Forbes' essay as a plant that migrated from Scandinavia during the Glacial Epoch of the Pleistocene. It thrives in thin peaty soils on limestone rock and is also found in moist calcareous flushes and gritty soil. It is classified as a vulnerable endemic species in the vascular plant British Red Data Book. Subsp. norvegica is found
