The main threats to the species are deforestation and urbanization in its limited range. Efforts are being made to protect its natural habitats and promote its cultivation as a house plant to reduce the demand for wild-collected specimens.
Schlumbergera opuntioides is a unique species of plant in the cactus family, Cactaceae, that is found only in the coastal mountains of south-eastern Brazil. Its natural habitats are humid forests and rocky areas, but it is currently threatened by habitat loss. This plant is part of the same genus as the popular house plants known as Christmas Cactus or Thanksgiving Cactus. It has leafless green stems that act as photosynthetic organs, and its flowers are pink to purple in color. The species was first described in 1897, but was not properly named until 1905. It is listed as "near threatened" due to deforestation and urbanization in its limited range, and efforts are being made to protect its habitats and promote its cultivation as a house plant.
