Matucana paucicostata is a cactus that belongs to the genus Matucana and the family Cactaceae. Its name comes from the Latin word paucicostatus, meaning "having few ribs". This cactus is dark gray-green in color and forms clusters, with a spherical shape when young and becoming short cylindrical as it ages. It can reach a diameter of 4-7 centimeters and a height of 7-15 centimeters. Matucana paucicostata has 7-11 broad, straight ribs and reddish-brown spines that turn gray as the plant matures. Its flowers are long-necked and purplish pink in color, with a diameter of 3 inches and reaching up to 6 inches in length. The cactus is native to the Peruvian region of Ancash, specifically in the valleys of Río Puchca, Mosna River, Río Huari, and Río Marañón. It can be found at altitudes of 1,800-2,800 meters above sea level.
