Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Cactaceae (tribe Trichocereeae). Approximately 8–10 species. The genus comprises tree-like columnar cacti native to the dry Inter-Andean valleys and adjacent foothill deserts of southern Ecuador and northern Peru (Andes; tropical dry forest and scrub from near sea level to mid elevations). The type species is Cereus armatus (Backeb., 1934).Plants are erect and sparsely branched, often with a distinct, trunk-like base; younger stems and areoles bear robust, sometimes curved or hooked central spines. Flowers are nocturnal, funnel-shaped to narrowly tubular, with a long hypanthial tube; the ovary is typically inferior and the fruit is spiny, globose to ovoid, becoming fleshy. Cotyledons are not known to be distinctive in this context.
Centers of diversity lie in the Marañón and lower Rímac drainages of Peru, with secondary representation in adjacent Ecuadorian departments; several taxa are locally endemic to single river valleys. Species occupy rocky slopes, limestone outcrops, and desertified plains; many occur in very arid microsites at low to mid elevations, a pattern consistent with diversification linked to edaphic and climatic specialization (Anderson, 2001; Hunt et al., 2006).
Pollination and dispersal appear to be mediated by bats and nocturnal moths based on flower form and anthesis (e.g., species such as Armatocereus laetus exhibit nocturnal white blooms), while spiny fruits are likely dispersed by rodents or gravity. Chromosome numbers are reported as 2n = 22 (base number x = 11) for some Peruvian taxa, a count consistent with many Andean Trichocereeae (Demaio et al., 2011).
Taxonomically, Armatocereus is placed in the core Trichocereeae clade in recent phylogenetic surveys; in the widely adopted classification it is accepted at generic rank with c. 8 accepted species (Hunt et al., 2006; WFO, 2024; POWO, 2024). Alternate treatments include the broad Echinopsis sensu lato framework (e.g., as subtribe Trichocereinae within Echinopsidinae), but broader circumscriptions that subsume Armatocereus within Echinopsis are not widely followed in current practice; some lumping of microgenera in that framework remains unresolved and warrants further testing (Ott et al., 2022; Schlumpberger, 2012).
Economically, several columnar species are used as ornamentals in xeriscapes and are collected by succulent hobbyists; A. laetus and A. riparius appear most frequently in horticultural trade. The genus is not a major timber or crop resource. Because many narrow endemics occupy fragile arid habitats, localized extraction and habitat degradation are ongoing concerns.
Key conservation actions include systematic red-list assessments and in situ protection of valley-endemic populations; long-term stability is likely sensitive to precipitation regimes under climate change (Anderson, 2001; Demaio et al., 2011).
