Suaeda vera, also known as shrubby sea-blite, is a small shrub that belongs to the Amaranthaceae family. It is a halophyte, meaning it thrives in salty environments, and can be found in arid and semi-arid saltflats, salt marshes, and similar habitats. The taxonomy of this species has been complicated due to misidentifications and incorrect nomenclature. It was first described by Linnaeus in 1753 and later validated by Gmelin in 1791. Its distribution is primarily along the coasts of the Mediterranean region, but there is confusion about its presence in Africa and Asia. It is used for its high sodium content in the production of soda ash and has potential as a forage crop when irrigated with seawater and supplemented with nutrients.
