Salsola soda is a small, annual, succulent shrub native to the Mediterranean Basin. It is a halophyte, meaning it is salt-tolerant, and is irrigated with salt water. Historically, it was used to produce soda ash, which is one of the alkali substances used in glassmaking and soapmaking. It is still cultivated as a vegetable and is popular in Italy and with gourmets around the world. It is also used in phytoremediation, as it can extract sodium from the soil to improve the growth of other crop plants.
