Nitrophila occidentalis, also known as boraxweed or western niterwort, is a perennial herb found in the western United States and northern Mexico. It grows in moist alkaline soils, such as salt pans, and has decumbent or erect stems up to 30 centimeters tall. The stems have paired branches with fleshy, linear or oblong green leaves. The flowers, which lack petals, are found in the leaf axils and have five pointed sepals that are white or pink in color. This plant is commonly found in clusters of up to 3 and is accompanied by small bracts.
