Halogeton glomeratus, also known as saltlover, Aral barilla, and halogeton, is a flowering plant native to Russia, Central Asia, and China. However, it has become a notorious noxious weed in the western United States, where it was introduced. This hardy annual herb can thrive in extremely saline and alkali soils, making it difficult for other plants to grow in these areas. It has a taproot and many lateral roots, with branches lined with narrow, fleshy, blue-green leaves. The plant produces small clusters of flowers and cylindrical fruit, which are dispersed by various means such as wind, water, and animals. Halogeton is a pest on rangelands, as it is highly toxic to livestock due to its high oxalate content. It can cause acute hypocalcemia in sheep, leading to death within 12 hours of ingestion. To combat its destructive effects, ranchers often provide calcium-supplemented feed to their sheep and introduce nonnative plants that can compete with halogeton. Proper grazing practices are also important in preventing the spread of this invasive species.
