Grayia spinosa, also known as hop sage or spiny hop sage, is a small, multibranched shrub that is part of the flowering plant family Amaranthaceae. It is found in various desert and mountain habitats across the Western United States. The plant has reddish-brown stems with spiny branches and oval-shaped green leaves. It is dioecious, meaning that male and female flowers are found on separate plants. The female flowers are surrounded by bracteoles and develop into colorful, wing-like structures in the spring. The plant is evergreen in some regions but sheds its leaves and flowers in the summer in hot or dry areas. Grayia spinosa is native to several states in the Western US and can be found in dry, alkaline soils in sagebrush, shadscale, or creosote bush communities. It was first described in 1838 and has since been classified under the genus Grayia.
