Allenrolfea occidentalis, also known as the iodine bush, is a low-lying shrub found in the Southwestern United States, California, Idaho, and northern Mexico. It thrives in sandy, salty, and alkaline soils, commonly found in desert washes and dry lakebeds. This plant is a common member of the alkali flat ecosystem. Its stems are knobby, fleshy, and appear jointed, with short, round segments. The leaves are flaky scales scattered across the stems. The genus was named after the English botanist Robert Allen Rolfe. In the past, the seeds of the iodine bush were used as a food source in North America.
