Gyrostemon (Desf.) is a small genus of the family Gyrostemonaceae, placed in the order Brassicales (APG IV, 2016). Approximately twelve species are recognized (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024), all endemic to Australia, with the greatest concentration in the Southwest Australian Floristic Region and scattered occurrences in eastern New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania (Hewson, 1991). The type species, designated by Desfontaines, is Gyrostemon australasicus (L.) Desf.

Plants are evergreen shrubs or small trees bearing alternate, simple leaves that are usually glandular‑pubescent; stipules are absent. Inflorescences are terminal or axillary spikes or racemes. Flowers are small and actinomorphic, with five sepals, five (often reduced) petals, and numerous stamens arranged in two whorls (8–16 total). The superior ovary is syncarpous, typically of four to five carpels, maturing into a dehiscent schizocarpic capsule that splits into mericarps each bearing a wing‑like seed, facilitating wind dispersal (anemochory) (Hewson, 1991). Pollination is effected primarily by small native insects, especially flies and native bees.

The genus shows high local endemism; many taxa are confined to granite outcrops, limestone heathlands and kwongan shrublands at elevations up to 400 m (Hewson, 1991). Phylogenomic analyses confirm its placement within Gyrostemonaceae as sister to Codonocarpus (Miller et al., 2022). While Hewson (1991) proposed an informal division into two sections—Gyrostemon sect. Gyrostemon (flowers with well‑developed petals) and Gyrostemon sect. Hyalis (reduced petals)—the infrageneric classification is not universally accepted (APG IV, 2016).

Gyrostemon species are occasionally cultivated for ornamental purposes, valued for fine, aromatic foliage; none are of major economic importance as timber or food crops, and they are not considered invasive.

Several taxa are threatened by habitat fragmentation, mining and altered fire regimes, with several listed as Vulnerable or Endangered under Australian legislation (POWO, 2024). Continued floristic surveys and population monitoring are needed to resolve taxonomic uncertainties and inform conservation planning.
