Boscia foetida, also known as the stink shepherd's tree or smelly shepherd's bush, is a shrub or tree native to southern Africa. It can be found in semi-desert and arid bushveld regions, and is known for its unpleasant-smelling flowers and freshly cut wood. It has traditional medicinal and magical uses, and is also used as protection against lightning. The tree has several subspecies and can grow up to 3 meters tall. Its leaves are small and hard, and its fruit is eaten by rodents, birds, and humans. Boscia foetida is found in Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Mozambique, and has different subspecies in different regions.
