Physaria fendleri, also known as Fendler's bladderpod, popweed, and lesquerella, is a flowering plant in the Brassicaceae family. It is native to the Southwestern United States and northern Mexico and is also cultivated in these regions due to its adaptation to arid climates and calcareous soils. This perennial plant produces hairless capsules called siliques, which contain 6 to 25 seeds each. It is best known for its high oil content, specifically the hydroxy acid lesquerolic acid, which can be used as a replacement for castor oil in various industries. However, the oil's reddish-brown color is a hindrance for certain applications, but breeding techniques may reduce this over time. P. fendleri also has potential uses for its natural gum and high protein mash, making it a possible food additive and animal fodder. Further breeding and refinement could also lead to the plant being cultivated in other climates and having other desirable characteristics.
