Lepidium heterophyllum, also known as Smith's cress or Smith's pepperwort, is a flowering plant in the mustard family native to western Europe. It can grow up to 90 cm tall and has grey-green foliage with narrow triangular leaves. It blooms between May and August, producing small white flowers with violet anthers. After flowering, it produces oval fruit capsules with dark brown seeds. This plant has been used in experiments to determine its potential for cleaning contaminated soils. It is found in acidic soils, shingle banks, and wasteland, and is native to countries such as Denmark, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. It has also been naturalized in other parts of Europe, as well as Canada, Chile, and the United States. While populations of Lepidium heterophyllum are currently stable, it is believed to be decreasing in southeastern England.
