Draba verna, also known as common whitlowgrass, is a small spring-flowering annual plant found in various parts of the world. It belongs to the cabbage family and can be found growing on walls, pavements, and bare ground. Its taxonomy is complex and not fully understood. The plant has a basal rosette and leafless flowering stems, with elliptical leaves that can turn reddish in color. Its flowers have four white petals that are deeply divided, giving the appearance of eight petals. The plant reproduces through self-pollination and has a dormant period during the summer months. Its taxonomy is still being studied due to its ability to produce genetically similar lines with different chromosome numbers. Common whitlowgrass is native to Europe, western Asia, and parts of North Africa, but has been introduced to other temperate regions. It is not considered an invasive species and is listed as "Least Concern" in terms of global status. The plant can be found in various habitats with bare soil and low levels of fertility. It is a food source for a few insect species and can be infected by two types of downy mildew. Despite its unusual shape, common whitlowgrass has no recorded uses in traditional medicine.
