Capsella rubella, also known as the pink shepherd's-purse, is a plant species in the genus Capsella and a close relative of Arabidopsis thaliana. It is a diploid species, unlike its closest ancestor, Capsella bursa-pastoris, which is tetraploid. C. rubella is used as a model plant to study the evolution of self-incompatibility into self-compatibility in plant reproduction and is found mostly in the Mediterranean region. It is believed that the species separated from its closest ancestor between 30,000 and 50,000 years ago.
