Russian comfrey, also known as Quaker comfrey, is a hybrid plant that is a cross between Symphytum officinale and S. asperum. It is the most economically important type of comfrey and is found naturally in the Caucasus region. It has been introduced as a crop in many places and is widespread in the British Isles. The plant has a deep taproot and large, simple leaves that grow on erect, branched stems. It produces pink or purple flowers from May to August and has segmented fruits. Russian comfrey is used for medicinal purposes, as a high-quality fertilizer, and as animal feed. It is also a good nectar source. The plant has a long history of cultivation, dating back to the 18th century when it was first introduced to St. Petersburg by an English gardener.
