Pholisma arenarium, also known as desert Christmas tree or purple sand food, is a flowering plant in the borage family. It is found in northwestern Mexico, Arizona, and southern California, growing in various habitats such as deserts, chaparral, and sandy coastal dunes. This fleshy perennial herb has an edible root that resembles a loaf and can grow up to 30 centimeters tall. As a parasitic plant, it relies on other shrubs for nutrients and lacks chlorophyll, giving it a brownish-gray or whitish color. The plant has hairy, pointed leaves and produces small purple flowers with a white margin.
