of Phacelia tanacetifolia are "negatively photoblastic", meaning they will only germinate in darkness. This annual plant grows up to 100 cm tall and has lacy, deeply cut leaves and bell-shaped flowers in shades of blue and lavender. It is native to the Southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico, but is also used in agriculture as a cover crop, bee plant, and attractant for beneficial insects. It is particularly attractive to pollinators such as bumblebees and honey bees, and also to hoverflies which are beneficial for biological pest control. Phacelia tanacetifolia is commonly found in deserts of southern California and is valued for its long flowering period and nectar-rich flowers.

Sow seeds at 20°C, expecting germination within 3 months without further temperature treatment.
Requires Darkness: These seeds need to be covered with soil or otherwise kept in the dark to germinate properly. Light inhibits their germination process.
