Mertensia maritima, also known as oyster leaf or oyster plant, is a perennial herb found on gravelly sea shores in the Northern Hemisphere. It is characterized by its reddish and later bright blue flowers and can reach up to 50 centimeters in length. This plant is native to Britain and Northern Europe, but its populations are declining in the British Isles. It also has two other varieties found in Canada, Spitzbergen, Alaska, and Northeastern Asia. M. maritima grows in a sub-Arctic climate and is exposed to harsh conditions such as cold temperatures, crashing waves, and strong winds. Its seeds remain dormant until a cold period of about 2°C is experienced.
