Hydrophyllum capitatum, also known as ballhead waterleaf, is a native plant found in Western North America. It grows up to 40 centimeters tall and has green, pinnately divided leaves with 7 to 11 leaflets. The flowers, which bloom from March to July, are bell-shaped and range in color from whitish to purplish blue. The plant produces capsules with 1 to 3 seeds each. It is found in open woodlands and slopes, and is adapted to a precipitation zone of 16 to 30 inches per year and a minimum temperature of -28 Fahrenheit. Indigenous peoples and settlers used the leaves and roots of this plant for cooking.
