Echium hypertropicum is a rare species of flowering plant that is native to Cape Verde. It is a member of the Boraginaceae family and is known locally as "língua-de-vaca" or cow tongue. This name is also used for two related species, Echium vulcanorum and Echium stenosiphon. The plant is listed as endangered by the IUCN and can grow up to 2 meters tall with lance-shaped leaves up to 20 cm long. Its flowers can be white, purple, or blue in color. The plant is mainly found on the islands of Santiago and Brava in sub-humid and humid areas. The oil from its seeds contains γ-linolenic acid and is used for medicinal and dietary purposes. However, due to its rarity, plants taller than 0.5-1 m are extremely rare today.
