Illicium ternstroemioides is a tree species found in northern Vietnam and Hainan Island in China. It belongs to the Schisandraceae or Illiciaceae family and can grow up to 12 meters tall. The tree has leathery, pointed leaves and produces clusters of red flowers with 10 to 14 papery or fleshy tepals. Its fruit is a star-shaped whorl with 12 to 14 follicles, each containing a poisonous seed. The tree is typically found in forest habitats near rivers and ravines. Its name is derived from Latin, meaning 'seductive', and its species name, ternstroemioides, means 'resembling Ternstroemia'.
