Guajaibonense is derived from the name of the region in Cuba where it is found, Guajaibón.
Illicium guajaibonense is a critically endangered shrub endemic to Pinar del Rio in Western Cuba. It was previously considered to be a subspecies of I. cubense, but differs in flower color and other characters. It grows as a shrub up to 2 meters tall and has simple, green leaves with a waxy appearance and a sweet, yet spicy aroma when crushed. Its flowers are small and red with reduced petals, thick sepals, and poorly structured stamens and carpels. Its uses and cultivation are unknown, but other Illicium species have been used medicinally. The name Illicium is derived from Latin and means 'seductive', while guajaibonense is derived from the name of the region where it is found.
