Phyteuma orbiculare, also known as round-headed rampion or Pride of Sussex, is a perennial plant belonging to the Campanulaceae family. It typically grows to be 20-50 centimeters tall and has deep blue, almost purple flowers that are actually a collection of smaller blooms. The stem is erect and the leaves vary in shape, with larger ones at the base and smaller ones along the stem. The flowers bloom from May to August and are followed by capsules containing small seeds. This plant is found in most of Europe, from the Pyrenees to the Balkans, and is commonly found in grasslands, meadows, and pine forests. It prefers full sun exposure and is often found on calcareous soils. There are three known subspecies of Phyteuma orbiculare. In the UK, it is known as the Pride of Sussex and is the county flower of Sussex. Its name was also chosen for a wind farm off the coast of Sussex.

Germination/Propagation Top

Suggest a correction or add new data!
Start at 20°C; if no germination occurs within 3 months, cool seeds to 4°C for 1-2 months, then return to 20°C.
Requires Light or Surface Sowing: These seeds need light to germinate and should not be covered with soil or only very lightly. They are often very small and sown directly on the surface of the growing medium.
