Lobelia dentata is a herb native to eastern Australia, commonly found in eucalyptus woodland and forest on sandy soils. It is not a very common species, but can be found in large numbers after bushfires. The plant grows up to 40 cm in height and has small, dark blue or purple flowers that bloom from March to November. Its name, dentata, refers to its toothed leaves which are 1-4 cm long and 3-10 mm wide. The fruiting capsule is 4-7 mm long and 4 mm in diameter. This species was first collected by Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander in 1770 during Captain James Cook's first voyage. It was first described in scientific literature in 1800 by Spanish botanist Antonio José Cavanilles. Lobelia dentata can be found along the coastal districts of New South Wales and Victoria, mainly in eucalypt forests.
