Asteraceae, with a very large flower head and often purple corollas, Vernonia contains about 500–1000 species distributed worldwide across the tropics and subtropics, with centers in tropical Africa and the Americas and secondary diversity in Asia; the type species is Vernonia anthelmintica. Leaves are alternate (or sometimes opposite in some sections) and usually entire to toothed, often with a resinous or glandular indumentum, and stipules are absent. Inflorescences are typically terminal or axillary panicles, corymbs, or solitary heads; heads are discoid (rarely radiate) and usually have 5–30 florets; corollas are mostly purple to pink (sometimes white or blue), with distinctively long, robust anthers that are included to slightly exserted; the style branches are slender with sweeping hairs below the bifurcation. The inferior ovary bears a single basal ovule; fruit is a ribbed achene with a persistent pappus of scales, awns, or both, and the seeds are often ridged.

Diversity and distribution are concentrated in tropical Africa (notably the Albertine Rift and West Africa) and the Americas (Brazilian cerrado, Guianas, and Mesoamerica), with fewer taxa in South and Southeast Asia and Australasia. Many species occur in open, fire-prone grasslands, savannas, woodland edges, and forest margins, from lowland to mid-elevations; multiple lineages have colonized secondary habitats, and several are weedy pioneers.

Intrinsic biology includes pollination primarily by bees and occasionally by butterflies; dispersal is wind-assisted via the pappus, except in some riverine species. Chromosome numbers are typically x = 9, with polyploidy reported in several lineages; cytological variation contributes to niche differentiation in savanna and woodland ecotypes.

Taxonomy and phylogeny reflect historical breadth across a complex of segregates, now widely treated as a polyphyletic assemblage that has been split into smaller genera in some treatments (Robinson 1999; Keeley et al., 2007; OPEN FILES). Major clades recognized by recent work (Keeley et al., 2007;OPEN FILES) include a primarily African lineage (sect. Streptachne), an American clade (sect. Lepidonia), and Asian taxa placed in Cacalia (auth.: L.). Species delimitation is unstable in some regions (e.g., eastern Brazil and tropical Africa), and systematic limits vary among authors (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024).

Human relevance encompasses horticulture and ornamentals (e.g., V. amygdalina, the “bitterleaf,” grown for edible leaves) and pioneer taxa used in restoration; some African and South American species are weedy and occasionally invasive. Research gaps persist in African taxonomy and phylogenetics; expanding molecular sampling and integrative species delimitation are priorities.

Conservation varies widely, with many widespread species secure while localized endemics in biodiversity hotspots (e.g., the Albertine Rift and Brazilian campos) face habitat loss. Expanding systematic and conservation assessments will be essential as climate change and land use intensification increase pressures on open-habitat lineages.
