(Asteraceae, tribe Senecioneae, subtribe Senecioninae) is a small Neotropical genus of herbaceous and shrubby species totaling roughly three to five accepted taxa (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024). It centers in the campo rupestre and campo limpo of the Espinhaço Range in Minas Gerais and Bahia, with the type species established by traditional usage in Asteraceae (Hind, 1995). Morphologically, the genus is defined by loose to openly branching habit, often somewhat woody stems, and capitula arranged in lax, sometimes paniculate synflorescences. The flower heads are radiate or disciform; involucres are cylindrical to campanulate with multiseriate phyllaries that are usually acute to acuminate. Fruits are cypselae that are obovoid to narrowly obovoid and typically glabrous, with a persistent, long, multi-seriate pappus formed of soft bristles (Hind, 1995). Stipules and conspicuous indumentum are not typical generic characters, though varying pubescence occurs among species.
Diversity is concentrated in the campos of the Espinhaço Range, a recognized center of endemism for many Asteraceae lineages. Species occur on sandy to rocky substrates, often in open, fire-maintained grasslands at mid-elevations; biogeographically, the genus appears restricted to eastern South America, with no records extending into Caribbean or North American floras (Hind, 1995; GBIF, 2024). Pollination and dispersal are as for many Senecioneae—primarily entomophily for capitula, and wind-dispersed achenes; no documented base chromosome number for Heterocoma is widely established.
Taxonomically, Heterocoma is treated within Senecioninae and has historically been segregated from Senecio and related genera on the basis of cypsela and pappus architecture (Hind, 1995). The name Stigmatotheca DC. has been proposed for a group close to Heterocoma, with detailed comparative treatments recognizing Heterocoma as distinct and placing Stigmatotheca as either congeneric or as a closely allied segregate (Hind, 1996). Current databases list Heterocoma as accepted and place Stigmatotheca in synonymy under it, although alternative treatments persisted in some floristic works (Hind, 1996). Hind (1995) recognized four species in a regional monograph.
The genus is of local conservation concern due to its reliance on campo rupestre habitats that are under pressure from mining, agriculture, and altered fire regimes. It has limited horticultural use outside specialized botanical collections (Hind, 1995). Future work should resolve the relationship to Stigmatotheca and secure authoritative species delimitation to underpin threat assessments across its range.
