Perezia (Asteraceae, tribe Nassauvieae) is a predominantly herbaceous, Andean-centered genus of approximately sixty species with secondary diversity in southern Chile and Argentina and from Costa Rica to Mexico. The genus currently centers on P. uniflora as the type (PAN Small, 2024; GCD, 2024). Most species occupy montane to subalpine grasslands, rocky slopes, and high-altitude cushion vegetation from about 2,500 to 4,500 meters, and a smaller suite extends to Patagonian steppe and temperate habitats.

Diagnostic morphology of Perezia combines heterogamous, radiate or disciform heads with striate or scabrid involucral bracts that typically bear well-developed apical awns or spines; the achenes are obovoid to turbinate and generally bear a double pappus, the outer series of short scalelike bristles and the inner series of fine, capillary hairs, a feature that helps separate it from nearby Nassauvieae taxa. Vegetatively the plants are often rhizomatous or caespitose, with basal rosettes or erect stems; leaves range from entire to pinnately lobed and bear variably dense indumentum of dendritic hairs. Capitula are solitary or few and display pistillate peripheral florets and perfect disc florets.

Diversity peaks in the Central and Southern Andes, with notable endemism in Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and the Argentinian Patagonia, correlating with montane grassland mosaics and outcrop communities. Subgeneric classifications have historically relied on floral and indumentum traits (Cabrera, 1957), but molecular work has not fully stabilized circumscription; several species formerly assigned to Perezia are now placed elsewhere (e.g., Triptilion and Naschia remain distinct), and monophyly of Perezia has been challenged (Roque & Funk, 2013; Walter et al., 2019). A recent infrageneric rearrangement based on phylogenomic data recognizes multiple lineages but acknowledges that species-level limits and synonymies require further revision (Walter et al., 2019).

Ecological data for Perezia remain sparse; pollination is likely generalist (mostly insect vectors) and fruits show wind-adapted pappus structures, but rigorous studies are lacking. Chromosome reports exist but remain inconsistent across surveys. The genus is primarily horticulturally significant in Andean gardens and rock work and includes a few low-stature ornamentals; it has no major timber or crop relevance.

Perezia faces pressure from alpine habitat loss, grazing, and climate-driven range shifts, yet taxonomic clarity is the primary research gap; ongoing phylogenomic work in Nassauvieae and regional treatments (Walter et al., 2019) will likely refine species limits and conservation priorities.
