Brachylaena R.Br. (Asteraceae: tribe Senecioneae) comprises approximately 12 species of evergreen trees and shrubs distributed across eastern and southern Africa, Madagascar, the Comoros, and the Mascarene Islands (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024). The genus inhabits coastal forests, woodland, and inland forests at elevations ranging from sea level to 1500 meters. Brachylaena uniflora (L.) J.raynal serves as the type species.

Morphologically, Brachylaena is characterized by alternate, coriaceous leaves with entire to dentate margins and distinctive white tomentose undersides. The inflorescences are paniculate or racemose capitula containing cream to yellowish flowers. The achenes are typically 5-ribbed with a pappus of numerous bristles, facilitating wind dispersal. The ovary position is inferior to half-inferior, typical of Asteraceae, with axile placentation. Stipules are absent.

The highest species diversity occurs in Madagascar and the eastern coastal forests of Africa, with several narrow endemics. Notable centers of diversity include Madagascar (6 species), eastern South Africa (3 species), and the Mascarene Islands (2 species). Most species occupy moist forest understorey or coastal forest habitats, with some extending into drier woodland margins.

Pollination mechanisms are poorly documented, though flower morphology suggests generalist insect vectors. Dispersal is primarily anemochorous via the pappus-adorned achenes. Chromosome counts are sparse; available data suggest a base number of x = 10, though this requires further verification (Hansen & Verbelen, 1997).

Taxonomically, Brachylaena is recognized within the "Brachylaena group" of Senecioneae, closely related to species of the Pacific genera before being removed (Nordenstam et al., 2009). Recent phylogenetic work supports monophyly but highlights limited sampling of eastern African taxa (Kellerman et al., 2005). Alternative classifications occasionally treat Oresitrophe as congeneric, though this remains contentious (Funk et al., 2009).

Several species hold horticultural significance, particularly B. elliptica and B. huillensis, valued for their ornamental foliage and drought tolerance. Some species, including B. ilicifolia, produce durable timber. No species are considered invasive. Conservation concerns center on habitat loss affecting several narrow endemics, particularly in Madagascar's rapidly disappearing coastal forests (Smith et al., 2022).
