Genus Jacobaea in Tribe Senecioneae
In botanical taxonomy, a genus (plural genera) is a rank used to group closely related species within a family. In the hierarchy, genus sits below family and above species.
Genera are defined by shared morphological, anatomical, and genetic characteristics (for example, features of flowers, fruits, seeds, or leaves) that indicate a close evolutionary relationship among the species they contain.
Each genus can include one or more species. Examples include Rosa (roses) and Solanum (nightshades, including tomato and eggplant).

Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Jacobaea (Mill.) is a genus of the family Asteraceae in the tribe Senecioneae, subtribe Senecioninae. It contains approximately twenty‑five accepted species, centred in temperate Eurasia with native populations extending from western Europe to the Caucasus and introduced in parts of North America, Australia, and New Zealand. The type species is Jacobaea vulgaris, historically treated within Senecio and now widely accepted as the generic name‑bearing species (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024).
Morphologically the genus is defined by herbaceous, usually rosette‑forming perennials with deeply lobed or pinnatifid leaves; stems may be erect or decumbent. The capitula are solitary or arranged in loose corymbs, each surrounded by a short calyculus of outer bracteoles and a compact involucre of two to three series of nearly equal phyllaries. Florets are both ligulate (ray) and tubular (disc); the latter possess a short tube and five‑lobed limb, and the achenes are topped by a pappus of numerous fine bristles that facilitate wind dispersal (Nordenstam, 2007). These characters, together with the presence of glandular indumentum on leaf surfaces and the generally narrow, lanceolate phyllaries, separate Jacobaea from the broader Senecio complex.
Species richness peaks in the Mediterranean basin, where several narrow endemics occur in the Iberian Peninsula, the Balkans, and the Caucasus. Typical habitats include mesic grasslands, coastal dunes, riverbanks, and montane slopes up to about 2 500 m, reflecting the genus’ ecological breadth (Galbany‑Casals et al., 2010). Pollination is largely entomophilous, with records of bees, flies, and butterflies visiting the capitula, while the plumed achenes are readily dispersed by wind over short distances.
Molecular phylogenetics consistently places Jacobaea as a monophyletic lineage distinct from Senecio (Pelser et al., 2004). Nordenstam (2007) recognised two internal sections—Jacobaea (including the type) and Omalocline—though many floras treat the genus without formal sectional names. Some taxonomic treatments retain the group within Senecio as a subgenus (Pelser et al., 2004), highlighting ongoing circumscription debates that are documented in regional floras and monographs.
In horticulture, several species, notably Jacobaea vulgaris and Jacobaea maritima, are cultivated for their attractive foliage and bright yellow inflorescences; J. vulgaris also furnishes a historic yellow dye. Conversely, J. vulgaris is a problematic pasture weed in many temperate regions because its pyrrolizidine alkaloids render it toxic to livestock, and it has become invasive in several introduced ranges (WFO, 2024).
Conservation assessments reveal that a subset of narrow endemics suffer from habitat loss and overgrazing, while the genus as a whole remains widespread. Continued taxonomic clarity, particularly through expanded phylogenomic sampling, will be essential for informing future conservation priorities for this morphologically distinct yet economically significant group.
