Suggest a correction!Hasteola Raf., a genus of herbaceous perennials in the Asteraceae tribe Senecioneae, comprises roughly five species in the eastern United States and northern Mexico (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024). The type species is Hasteola suaveolens (L.) G.L.Nesom, originally described as Senecio suaveolens (Nesom, 1995). Plants have erect, usually unbranched stems up to 60 cm tall, bearing alternate, simple leaves that are lanceolate to ovate, entire to shallowly dentate, and sparsely pubescent. Inflorescences are terminal corymbs of solitary capitula; each head bears 5–12 yellow to orange ray florets surrounding many disc florets. Involucres are cylindrical with several rows of linear phyllaries, and the pappus consists of delicate bristles that aid wind dispersal of the cypsela.
Diversity and range concentrate in the Appalachian Highlands, the Ozark Plateau, and the Gulf Coastal Plain, where species occupy mesic woodlands, streambanks, and open meadows from near sea level to about 1 500 m (POWO, 2024). Hasteola mexicana G.L.Nesom, the only species extending beyond the United States, is confined to the Sierra Madre Oriental of northeastern Mexico (WFO, 2024). The genus shows a pattern of narrow endemism, with each species generally restricted to a specific drainage basin or geographic segment.
Pollination is mediated by bees and hoverflies attracted to disc florets, while the pappus facilitates long‑distance wind transport of achenes (Baldwin et al., 2010). No specialized fungal or microbial associations are reported beyond the common mycorrhizal relationships typical of Asteraceae.
Taxonomically, Hasteola is recognized as a distinct genus in current checklists (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024). Nesom (1995) proposed two subgenera, Hasteola and Streptopodium, based on capitulum arrangement, but molecular phylogenies place the genus within a clade that also includes Packera, leading some authors to treat Hasteola as a synonym of Packera (Baldwin et al., 2010). Nonetheless, most floras retain Hasteola pending further resolution of its circumscription.
Human relevance is modest: a few species are cultivated as ornamental perennials for their bright, long‑lasting flower heads and are included in native‑plant restoration mixes. No species are major agricultural weeds.
Conservation concerns focus on habitat loss from land‑use change and competition with invasive species; several populations are considered at risk. Ongoing cytogenetic and phylogenetic research is expected to clarify species limits and guide future protection measures.
