Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Farfugium (Lindl.) is a herbaceous genus of the Asteraceae (tribe Senecioneae) with about five species. It ranges across temperate East Asia, from Japan and the Korean Peninsula through southern China to northern Taiwan, occurring in moist forest margins, mountain slopes and subalpine meadows (800–3000 m). Farfugium japonicum (L.) L. is the type species.
Morphology is characterized by a basal rosette of large, leathery, ovate‑to‑cordate leaves, densely tomentose below and lacking stipules. Leafless erect scapes bear a solitary capitulum or a few‑head panicle. Capitula are radiate with 15–30 yellow rays surrounding many tubular disc florets; the involucre is imbricate and the receptacle is slightly convex. The inferior ovary is unilocular with a single basal ovule; style branches are bifurcated. The fruit is an achene with 5–10 ribs and a soft pappus for wind dispersal.
Diversity centers on the Japanese islands and Taiwan, where narrow endemics occur, while mainland China harbors broader‑ranged taxa. Species occupy shaded forest interiors and moist alpine grasslands, favoring siliceous substrates in the montane zone. This pattern mirrors the Sino‑Japanese floristic disjunction, with divergence dated to the late Pliocene.
Intrinsic biology is sparsely recorded; generalist pollinators (bees, flies) visit the yellow rays. Dispersal is mainly anemochorous by the pappus, with occasional short‑range epizoochory when achenes cling to animal fur. Cytology consistently gives a base number x = 9 (Nakai 1915).
Taxonomic history is complex. Farfugium was described by Lindley (1821) and later treated as a section of Ligularia by many authors. Molecular phylogenies (Pelser et al., 2017; Chen et al., 2022) place Farfugium as a monophyletic sister group to core Ligularia, supporting generic rank; however, regional floras (WFO, 2024) keep it as a subgenus of Ligularia. Some treatments synonymize it with Cacalia (POWO, 2024). Authoritative checklists (WFO, 2024; POWO, 2024) consequently list Farfugium as a separate genus, reflecting ongoing debate.
Human relevance is largely horticultural. Farfugium japonicum is cultivated for its bold foliage, with variegated cultivars used in shade gardens; other species are occasional ornamentals. The genus lacks crops, timber trees, and invasive weeds.
Conservation and outlook are hampered by limited field data for several narrow endemics; habitat loss from forestry and climate change remains the principal threat. Future work should prioritize population assessments and ex situ conservation to safeguard remaining taxa within the dynamic East Asian flora.
