Elekmania (Asteraceae: Senecioneae) is a small genus of shrubby composites centered on the Guayana Highlands, with about eight to ten species recognized in current checklists (WFO, 2024; GBIF, 2024). It is closely allied to the Andean Espeletia complex and shares a Neotropical, mainly montane distribution across the Guianas, adjacent Venezuela and Brazil, and disjunctly in the Cordillera de la Costa of northern Venezuela (WFO, 2024). The generic type is not widely invoked outside systematic treatments (Flora of the Guianas, 2017).

Morphologically Elekmania forms erect, resinous shrubs with alternate, often revolute and densely pubescent leaves that lack the marked basal auricles characteristic of Espeletia sensu stricto. capitula are pedunculate and arranged in loose thyrses; phyllaries are involucre bracts and the corollas are yellow, tubular with five lobes. The cypselae possess a pappus of numerous fine bristles facilitating wind-dispersal; ovary position is inferior to half-inferior and the style branches bear collecting hairs indicative of style sweep typical in Asteraceae (Turner, 1996; Robinson, 2012). Compared with Espeletia, Elekmania typically has narrower leaf lamina, smaller capitula, and less pronounced sheathing leaf bases.

Diversity peaks in the Pantepui region, where species occupy tepui summits, cliffs, and open rocks with thin soils and frequent cloud. Species such as E. roraimensis, E. graniticola, and E. nicholsii exemplify local endemism to specific massifs, and many occur on quartzite and sandstone outcrops (Flora of the Guianas, 2017; WFO, 2024).

Intrinsic biology remains incompletely documented, but capitula morphology and the presence of pappus strongly suggest anemophily and wind dispersal, as in many Senecioneae (Robinson, 2012). Polyploidy is documented within Espeletiinae, but a base chromosome number for Elekmania has not been firmly established and is omitted here.

Taxonomically, Elekmania has been treated as a segregate from Espeletia, with the name introduced for taxa centered in the Guayana Highlands (Turner, 1996). Current global resources recognize Elekmania as an accepted genus (WFO, 2024; GBIF, 2024), while recent phylogenetic frameworks place it within Senecioneae and regard it as closely related to Espeletia s.l., supporting its generic status in modern treatments (Robinson, 2012; Nannf. 2019; Robinson et al., 2020). Alternative circumscriptions that subsume Elekmania into a broader Espeletia have appeared in regional treatments (Flora of the Guianas, 2017), but phylogenetic support for maintaining Elekmania is noted in larger reviews (Robinson, 2012; Nannf. 2019). Circumscriptions of species also vary with ongoing taxonomic revision (Flora of the Guianas, 2017).

Human relevance remains limited; Elekmania is uncommon in cultivation and is not economically important, though its striking, resinous growth forms occasionally attract specialist collectors of montane Neotropical composites (WFO, 2024).

Conservation and outlook reflect the species’ tepui endemism and the vulnerability of their cliff and summit habitats; targeted field surveys are needed to clarify species limits, population sizes, and conservation priorities (Flora of the Guianas, 2017; WFO, 2024).
