Pulicaria Gaertn. belongs to Asteraceae (tribe Inuleae) and comprises roughly a hundred herbaceous to subshrubby species distributed across the Mediterranean basin, Macaronesia, Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia into Pakistan and the Sahara–Sahel interface (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024; Anderberg et al., 2017). The genus is centered in dry to semi-arid habitats including sandy steppes, dunes, riverbanks, and disturbed grounds, with several taxa tolerant of saline or calcareous conditions; the type species is P. vulgaris Gaertn. (POWO, 2024). Morphologically, Pulicaria is recognized by mostly capitula with radiate flowers, persistent involucres of imbricate phyllaries, paleaceous receptacles, heterogamous heads, and fruits crowned by a pappus that usually comprises an outer row of short scales and an inner row of longer, conspicuous bristles (Bremer, 1994). Vegetatively the plants are often aromatic with entire to pinnately lobed leaves and an indumentum that may be glabrous to lanate or glandular, and their growth forms range from annual herbs to perennial subshrubs (POWO, 2024).

Diversity concentrates in the Irano–Turanian region and the Mediterranean, with several endemics in North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula; in Europe, P. dysenterica and P. paludosa are widely distributed along wet to mesic margins (GBIF, 2024). Although broad patterns are consistent, the precise number of accepted species varies among sources, reflecting ongoing taxonomic refinement and the complex delimitation of closely related genera such as Pentanema and Iphiona (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024). Pulicaria typically occupies open, often nutrient-poor substrates at low to mid elevations, though montane taxa occur in North Africa and the Levant (POWO, 2024).

Reproductive biology is incompletely documented across the genus, but field observations indicate attraction of generalist pollinators including flies and bees to the yellow heads; the pappus facilitates wind dispersal of the achenes over short to moderate distances (POWO, 2024). The base chromosome number for the group is typically x=9, with polyploidy recorded in several taxa (Ghaffari et al., 2013). Many species reproduce annually or perennially via seed and may form ephemeral colonies, an attribute consistent with their ruderal or pioneer niches in arid and semi-arid landscapes (Anderberg et al., 2017).

Pulicaria has long been placed in the “Pulicaria group” with Pentanema and Iphiona, and recent molecular work supports a monophyletic core centered on Old World taxa, though intergeneric boundaries remain dynamic and source treatments diverge: the World Flora Online aligns Pulicaria and Pentanema as separate (WFO, 2024), whereas the Global Compositae Database has merged them under Pulicaria sensu lato (Bremer, 1994; Greuter & von Raab-Straube, 2008). Pollen morphology is generally uniform within the tribe, supporting broad circumscriptions, yet a recent phylogeny based on ITS/ETS sequences resolves Pulicaria species as paraphyletic with respect to Pentanema, highlighting the need for integrative revisions (Anderberg et al., 2017). This persistent uncertainty underscores the need to distinguish robust, consensus-level information (species richness, tribal placement, morphological syndrome) from unsettled aspects (generic limits, some species boundaries).

Pulicaria is not a major crop or timber genus, but a few species—most notably P. dysenterica—are cultivated as ornamentals or naturalized in damp garden borders, and local use as aromatic herbs is occasionally documented in ethnobotanical literature (Anderberg et al., 2017). No species currently hold significant economic roles beyond limited horticultural interest. Given ongoing taxonomic flux and scattered conservation data, additional targeted assessments are recommended to evaluate localized threats such as habitat degradation and invasive competitors; nevertheless, most taxa appear secure within their broad geographic ranges (POWO, 2024).
