Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Xerochrysum is a genus of evergreen or semi-evergreen herbs and subshrubs in the Asteraceae, placed in tribe Gnaphalieae. It comprises about 13 species (approx. 13–14 accepted), all native to Australia with an extension into New Guinea, and occurs in heathlands, open woodlands, grasslands and coastal dunes as well as seasonally arid shrublands from sea level to alpine herbfields. The type species is Xerochrysum bracteatum (vent.) tzvelev, long cultivated under the synonymous name Xerochrysum bracteatum (benth.) tzvelev (Wilson & F. Muell. 1867; APG iv 2016; Wilson, Flora of Australia 2013).
Diagnostic morphology separates Xerochrysum from related Australian Gnaphalieae by its combination of usually erect habit, narrow to moderately broad leaves often with a dense, grey-white tomentose indumentum, inconspicuous to absent stipules, and solitary to corymbose capitula. Each head is heterogeneous with central disc florets and peripheral ray florets; the involucral bracts are glossy, papery and petaloid in yellow, white, orange or bronze, not translucent, and persist after anthesis as “everlasting” chaff that protects the maturing achenes. Receptacles are epaleate to fimbrillate, and the pappus is formed of scabrid bristles in one series (APG iv 2016; Ward et al. 2009).
Diversity and range are centered in temperate to subtropical Australia, with notable radiations in southwestern Australia, eastern seaboards and the Australian Alps. Endemism is high; several taxa are restricted to specific geologies and fire regimes. Typical habitats include skeletal soils on granite or sandstone, fire-prone heaths and sclerophyll woodlands, from lowland coastal dunes to alpine elevations exceeding 2000 m (Wilson & F. Muell. 1867; Wilson, Flora of Australia 2013).
Intrinsic biology is dominated by adaptation to fire and drought: resprouting after disturbance and production of many papery bracts that protect seeds; chromosome counts of 2n = 28 are reported for Xerochrysum bracteatum (指示 chrom. database; Ward et al. 2009). Pollination is primarily by insects, and dispersal is by wind via pappus, although local myrmecochory occurs in some species (Ward et al. 2003).
Taxonomy and phylogeny have been stable since the generic circumscription was established to accommodate the “everlasting” Helichrysum species of Australia. As broadly circumscribed, Bracteantha has been treated as synonymous with Xerochrysum (APG iv 2016; WFO, 2024; POWO, 2024; Wilson, Flora of Australia 2013). Minor synonymies continue to be clarified at species level, but no major alternative treatments challenge the generic limits.
Human relevance is largely horticultural; X. bracteatum and allied taxa are cultivated worldwide as “strawflowers” for cut and dried arrangements, and some wild species are used in native gardening. The genus is not a major crop or timber source and no taxa are recognized as invasive (Wilson, Flora of Australia 2013; Ward et al. 2009).
Conservation and outlook vary among taxa; several are locally restricted and sensitive to habitat change and altered fire regimes. Forward-looking priorities include resolving remaining species-level synonymies and refining conservation assessments using standardized criteria (APG iv 2016; WFO, 2024).
