Genus Argyranthemum in Tribe Anthemideae
In botanical taxonomy, a genus (plural genera) is a rank used to group closely related species within a family. In the hierarchy, genus sits below family and above species.
Genera are defined by shared morphological, anatomical, and genetic characteristics (for example, features of flowers, fruits, seeds, or leaves) that indicate a close evolutionary relationship among the species they contain.
Each genus can include one or more species. Examples include Rosa (roses) and Solanum (nightshades, including tomato and eggplant).

Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Argyranthemum (Webb) is a genus in the family Asteraceae, tribe Anthemideae. It comprises approximately 26 accepted species and is endemic to Macaronesia, with the vast majority restricted to the Canary Islands and a single representative on Madeira. The type species widely cited in modern treatments is Argyranthemum frutescens (L.) Sch.Bip. (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024).
The genus is distinguished by shrubby to subshrubby habit; leaves are usually alternate, deeply lobed to pinnatisect, with a characteristic greyish-green to glaucous indumentum; stipules are absent. Inflorescences are solitary capitula borne at branch tips, with conspicuous ray florets that vary from white to yellow and tubular disk florets; receptacles are convex and usually epaleate. The involucral bracts are arranged in several series with scarious margins. The ovary is inferior; fruits are cypselae bearing a pappus that ranges from a short corona of scales to an inconspicuous ring, sometimes absent.
Diversity is concentrated in the Canary Islands, where several island-endemic species occur, often in xeric to semi-arid habitats such as coastal cliffs, inland scrub, and dry slopes from near sea level to mid-elevations; the Madeira species occupies analogous habitats. This pattern reflects classic island biogeography, with repeated speciation linked to ecological gradients and geographic isolation (Francisco-Ortega et al., 1996).
Intrinsic biology remains incompletely documented. Flower morphology suggests generalist insect pollination typical of Asteraceae, but detailed accounts are sparse. Dispersal is largely by wind, with pappus-bearing achenes; coastal taxa may also utilize oceanic drift. Chromosome numbers vary across the genus, with a base number of x=9 reported in many species (Humphries, 1976; Francisco-Ortega et al., 1996).
Taxonomically, Argyranthemum is now treated as a distinct genus separate from Chrysanthemum sensu stricto, following Humphries’s revision (1976). Subsequent molecular work places it within the Anthemideae in a clade allied to Mauranthemum and related genera (Watson et al., 1999). Infrageneric ranks are inconsistently applied; although sectional or subgeneric schemes have been proposed, most contemporary treatments recognize natural groups without formal rank. No major recircumscriptions or rival treatments have altered generic boundaries since these foundational studies, though species limits in several Canary Island endemics remain under evaluation.
Humans value Argyranthemum for horticulture; A. frutescens and allied hybrids are widely cultivated as ornamental daisies in temperate regions and have become locally naturalized in parts of Europe and elsewhere. Despite horticultural use, conservation attention is directed at narrow endemics facing habitat pressures; targeted research on island populations and threat assessments would strengthen long-term stewardship.
