Vernonia galamensis, also known as ironweed, is a plant in the sunflower family that is primarily grown in East Africa for its oilseed. This oil, rich in a useful fatty acid called vernolic acid, is used in the production of plastics, coatings, and drying agents. The plant is also being studied as a potential replacement for traditional plasticizers and binders in the production of paints and PVC, which could help reduce smog pollution. While it is primarily grown in Ethiopia, efforts are being made to breed more productive varieties for cultivation in other regions. The plant is highly variable in appearance and can grow in a variety of conditions, but it requires loose, porous soil and dry weather. It is also found in the wild, where it can act as a weed, and is a food source for certain insects. There are several subspecies of Vernonia galamensis.
