Verbesina occidentalis is a flowering plant in the family Asteraceae. It is native to the United States and is found in every southeastern state except Arkansas. It is often considered a weedy plant of disturbed areas, due to its presence in managed agricultural areas such as hayfields. It has yellow disk flowers and winged stems, and the leaves are broad and ovate in shape with a serrated or toothed margin. It prefers sunny habitats and moderate amounts of moisture. It can be used in the home garden for insect control, as it attracts the soldier beetle. It has been shown to be sensitive to rising ozone levels and to effect the diversity of the plant community. The most successful form of control are herbicides.
