Taraxacum pankhurstianum, also known as the St Kilda dandelion, is a newly identified species of dandelion that was discovered in 2012 on the island of Hirta in the St Kilda archipelago. It was named after Richard Pankhurst, a retired staff member at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh who suggested collecting the seeds. The plant is distinguished by its unique hairy exterior bracts and smaller size compared to the common dandelion. It is believed to be endemic to the area and one of the rarest plants in Scotland's flora. The flower may have originated in Iceland and been brought to Hirta by birds or Vikings. Its rarity on the island may be due to being eaten by animals such as sheep and birds.
