Symphyotrichum spathulatum, also known as western mountain aster, is a perennial flowering plant in the Asteraceae family. It is native to western North America, including parts of Mexico, and is commonly found in mountainous regions. The plant can reach heights of 20 to 80 centimeters and blooms in July and August with violet ray florets and yellow disk florets. It has thin, hairless leaves and its flower heads grow in corymbiform to paniculiform arrays. The plant has a base number of x = 8 and can have diploid, tetraploid, hexaploid, or octaploid cytotypes. There are three recognized varieties of Symphyotrichum spathulatum, and it is a parent species of two other Symphyotrichum species. The plant is found in meadows, grasslands, and forests at elevations of 1,200 to 2,900 meters. It is listed as a secure species by NatureServe, with the exception of one variety which is possibly extirpated in Alberta.
