Stokesia is a unique genus of flowering plants that belongs to the daisy family, Asteraceae. It is the only genus in this family that contains a single species, Stokesia laevis, also known as Stokes' aster. This species is native to the southeastern region of the United States and produces beautiful purple, blue, or white flowers during the summer. It is commonly grown as a garden flower and there are various cultivars available, such as 'Klaus Jelitto', 'Colorwheel', and 'Blue Danube'. Some more uncommon cultivars include 'Rosea' with pink flowers and 'Mary Gregory' with yellow flowers. Interestingly, Stokesia also contains vernolic acid, a vegetable oil with commercial uses. The genus is named after Jonathan Stokes, an English botanist and physician.
