(Māori)

Sonchus kirkii, also known as New Zealand sow thistle or shore puha, is a herb in the Asteraceae family that is native to coastal regions of New Zealand. It has green spiky leaves and yellow flowers, and can grow up to 30 centimeters tall. However, its conservation status is currently listed as "declining" and it is considered "at risk" due to competition from faster-growing weed species such as Sonchus asper and Sonchus oleraceus. The shore puha was once a common plant, but its numbers have been decreasing since the mid-1980s. It is also known by other names such as pūhā, puha, puwha, and raurōroa in the Māori language.
