Senecio ilicifolius is a plant native to South Africa and part of the Asteraceae family. It can be found in the Eastern and Western Cape regions, growing up to 1 meter tall and easily recognizable by its stiff, holly-like leaves. These leaves are characterized by their clasping, adnate, and decurrent base, as well as their acute, toothed, and scabrous-dotted appearance. The Senecio genus is known for its high alkaloid content, and S. ilicifolius specifically is listed in 'Meyler's Side Effects of Herbal Medicines' as producing pterophine and senecionine. This compound, with a chemical formula of C18H25O5N, is toxic and can cause liver cirrhosis in both animals and humans. It has a melting point of 232° and is only slightly soluble in water. Interestingly, it is not destroyed during the baking process of bread made from contaminated wheat.
