Pleurophyllum criniferum is a unique species of flowering plant that belongs to the Asteraceae family. It can only be found in the subantarctic islands of New Zealand. This large perennial herb can grow up to 2 meters tall and has leaves that can reach a length of over a meter. The leaves are covered in silky white hairs and come in various shapes, mostly oblong-ovate to lanceolate. The plant produces 15-30 flower heads in elongated racemes with dark purple disk-florets and inconspicuous ray-florets. It blooms from December to February and fruits from January to May. This species is endemic to the subantarctic islands of New Zealand, specifically the Antipodes, Auckland, and Campbell Islands. It is commonly found in the megaherb community and grows on peaty ground in herbfields.
